The legendary Christmas Eve session – Miles and Monk together, sparks and all.
On December 24, 1954, Miles Davis entered Rudy Van Gelder’s studio with Thelonious Monk, Milt Jackson, Percy Heath, and Kenny Clarke – a summit of giants that produced some of the most storied music of the decade. Completing the album is a classic 1956 quintet side featuring John Coltrane. Two contrasting takes of “The Man I Love” bookend the program, with “Bemsha Swing” and a definitive “Round About Midnight” in between. Fueled by the creative tension between Miles’s spare lyricism and Monk’s angular genius, this is hard bop history you can hear being made.
