The album was recorded on January 20, 1963 by an eleven-piece band. The album comprises a single continuous composition divided into four tracks and six movements. Mingus has called the album’s orchestral style “ethnic folk-dance music”, and it has been described by critics as blending “jazz and classical but also integrates elements of African music and Spanish themes.” Jazz and music critics often characterize it as one of Mingus’s two major masterworks (the other being ‘Mingus Ah Um’) and it has frequently ranked highly on lists of the best albums of all time. ‘The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady’ is among the most acclaimed jazz records of the 20th century. Richard Cook and Brian Morton, writers of The Penguin Guide to Jazz, awarded the album a “Crown” token, the publication’s highest accolade, in addition to the highest four-star rating. Alex Rossi & Greg Wilson – Acoustic (Blue Marble Vinyl)

UPCOMING
When I first started playing harmonica in southern Brazil, there were barely any accessible references for blues musicians. At that time, the band Blues Etílicos was practically the only „blues university“ we had in the country. Greg Wilson was the lead vocalist, and I listened to them constantly, trying to absorb everything I could — especially the harmonica of my friend, mentor and musical reference, Flávio Guimarães. Getting the chance to play live with Greg, turn that experience into a recording, and now release it on vinyl, is not only a tremendous honor, but also a posthumous tribute to a true icon of Brazilian music. A friend, a teacher, and a human being of remarkable generosity. The album “Acoustic” was born completely spontaneously — almost by accident. The producer Carlos Branco was organising an acoustic concert for Greg Wilson in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and had the idea of adding harmonica to the performance. He invited me (Alex Rossi). Because it was an acoustic setting, I prepared in advance by studying songs Greg used to play in acoustic versions with Blues Etílicos. On the day of the show a Sunday, Greg arrived around noon. We sat down, put together a setlist, ran a quick soundcheck and went straight to the stage. What was supposed to be just a one-off concert ended up becoming a record. The sound technician, on his own initiative, recorded the entire performance in stereo and later handed me the material. I was amazed by the raw and honest sound quality. I brought the recordings to a studio that did a subtle mastering on the audio. The result was so compelling that we decided to release it as an official album. In 2009, it came out under the U.S. blues label TopCat Records. Now, years later, the album finds new life on vinyl, with a special reissue by Second Records, celebrating the intimate, sincere and spontaneous sound of that unique day. I truly hope that listeners and lovers of honest, heartfelt music will enjoy this album — which is, above all, an act of gratitude, remembrance, and celebration of the greatness of Greg Wilson. Lady Day in full bloom — a lush, late-career triumph with orchestral depth and emotional power. Released in 1958, Songs for Distingué Lovers captures Billie Holiday in one of her final great studio performances. Backed by an all-star group including Ben Webster (tenor sax), Harry “Sweets” Edison (trumpet), and Jimmy Rowles (piano), she revisits classic standards with the emotional rawness and interpretive mastery that only she could deliver. Highlights include “Day In, Day Out,” “Just One of Those Things,” and “Stars Fell on Alabama,” each elevated by Holiday’s ability to imbue every lyric with lived experience. The arrangements are sophisticated yet uncluttered, allowing her voice to carry the weight of the storytelling. A hard bop classic with effortless cool, lyrical phrasing, and brilliant group interplay. Relaxin’ is one of the most beloved albums from Miles Davis’s iconic first great quintet, recorded in 1956 and originally released in 1958. Featuring John Coltrane on tenor sax, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums, this session distills the magic of the group’s telepathic chemistry and relaxed swing. The program includes standout performances on “If I Were a Bell,” “Oleo,” and “You’re My Everything,” blending uptempo burners and ballads with fluid ease. Davis’s muted trumpet work is particularly striking, conveying emotion through subtle phrasing rather than pyrotechnics. Relaxin’ remains one of the most accessible and enduring entries in Miles’s vast catalog a perfect gateway into 1950s jazz.
